While lying on the couch munching through the cats weight in chocolate and contemplating what I should have been doing, which was taking a brisk 5km walk, I got to thinking. Why was I in fact loathe to be getting off said couch? The couch wasn’t overly comfy, and I had compelling reasons to be getting up and getting out, so why could I just not gather the inner momentum long enough to do it?

It comes down to motivation. Scientists have long argued over whether motivation is something that is intrinsic or extrinsic, as well as whether we are more positively or negatively motivated as human beings. Positive meaning we are inspired to do something, achieve something or act in a certain way because we are rewarded at the end, and negative motivation being that we are encouraged to behave in a certain way because of dire consequences should we fail to!

Motivation is hard enough when it’s just one’s self that you are trying to kickstart into action, but when you have to motivate an entire team of people it can be a terrifying prospect.

Our Avocado Vision trainers responsible for the 90 minute short format training on motivation had this to say around getting started on motivating your staff.

We don’t believe in negative motivation as it’s proven to be a lot less productive than positive and is really only a last resort. We believe that every leader should start by understanding that motivation is a deeply personal thing. Every single member of your team will be motivated by different things, and without knowledge of each employee you will struggle to understand what makes them tick, what makes them want to achieve. This could be as simple as knowing that a single mom is desperate for a little more personal time or leave and structuring work incentives around that premise. Or knowing that the software development geeks are dying to watch the new Star Wars movie (ok, maybe not Phantom Menace), and that giving them a morning to go and see it can be the incentive to achieve their sprint goals. It’s important to realise that just as motivation is personal, the ways you can spark it off with an employee are too, and that what works for one, may not work for another.
