BTS New York: Multipliers for Non-Profit Leaders

BTS
May, 2020

In the first week of March 2020, the BTS New York office hosted its first in-house social impact event – “Multipliers for Non-Profit Leaders.” It had been a long-time goal for the NYC Social Impact team to find creative ways to make a sustainable impact across the broader community while leveraging BTS’ leadership development capabilities.

The event was an immersive leadership experience which sought to develop leaders of non-profits, NGO’s and other public sector organizations. Participation was free of charge, through the growing BTS social impact initiatives. The audience ranged from C-suite executives to program and volunteer directors, across grassroots community-based organizations and global 501c3s alike, with equally diverse focus areas including education, child empowerment, animal protection, environmental affairs, and disaster recovery, to name a few.

The full-day event was based on BTS’ Multipliers simulation – a powerful experience that enables participants to lead with a “Multiplier” mindset. Built in partnership with Liz Wiseman, author of the best-selling book, Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter, the interactive session explores how great leaders "multiply" the value and output of their teams. Wiseman's research shows that Multiplier leaders get more intelligence from their teams than their “Diminisher” counterparts do - in fact, over twice as much. The exciting news is that the mindset and skills of Multipliers can be learned and developed by any leader.

At the end of the day, the event was equally fulfilling for the BTS team and participants alike. Many of the attendees reiterated how valuable they found the session’s content and exchange of ideas across their new network to be, while also providing meaningful feedback for the BTS team to be able to continue building on their social impact initiatives and offerings going forward. Here are some words from a few participants:

“Thanks again for inviting me to this excellent and informative event. I really enjoyed it and came away with quite a few management takeaways. Looking forward to start applying them!”

“I thought this was one of the more useful and valuable trainings I’ve ever attended. I found the material engaging and I came away with insights to how I can improve and validation for things I think I already do.”

“It gave me a lot to think about in terms of my behavior and approach as a supervisor and also how I, in turn, respond to my own supervisor.”

The Social Impact NYC team would like to thank everyone involved for making the event possible and is excited to expand the Multipliers for Non-Profit Leaders initiative, as well as other social impact activities, by hosting more events in the future. The team has already heard from multiple BTS offices across the U.S. that expressed interest in developing their own social impact programs and hosting a Multipliers for Non-Profit Leaders event in their own city. So, keep an eye out for future BTS Social Impact events coming to a city near you!
